MISSION - Traffic is increasing at a human-smuggling corridor in Hidalgo County.
A CHANNEL 5 NEWS crew set out to document the phenomenon in the small community of La Cuchilla.
The small cluster of homes sits just 2 miles southwest of Mission.
The news crew on Monday witnessed a seemingly endless flow of illegal immigrants trekking through the small community.
Border Patrol agents rounded up 12 people at La Cuchilla Circle. Residents said the scene is a common occurrence.
The small community is just north of the Mission Hike and Bike Trail. The brushy area provides an ideal hiding spot for illegal immigrants.
Mission police caught up with a group. The officers had problems communicating with the immigrants - they are from India.
The CHANNEL 5 NEWS crew showed the immigrants on a GPS how far they had traveled. Some in the group indicated Ahamedthey were fromabad, India.
Border Patrol agents eventually arrived and ushered the group to a van.
The news crew headed to the bike and hike trail. Five minutes later they came across a group of immigrants from Mexico. They said they were abandoned by their smuggler.
A man told the news crew he had slept in the brush.
"We're supposed to wait here for our ride," the man said in Spanish. The group rushed away into the brush.
La Cuchilla residents said they see groups of immigrants every day.
"Sometimes we feel bad for them. They come here for a better life, and the American dream ... and it's not like that," Ricardo Palma said.
"It's something different. We see a lot of stuff that nobody sees," Palma said.
