Activists hold forum in South Tucson on immigration reform

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - A new proposal on immigration reform continues to have people divided. Several local activists held a forum earlier in South Tucson to discuss the impact it could have on the Tucson area.
People unsure of how the new comprehensive immigration reform could affect them and their families attended a forum Saturday in South Tucson.
Activists lectured to about 60 people explaining a new proposal the Senate is debating. This new amendment would add 20,000 border patrol agents, extend fencing to 700 miles and allow a 50 billion dollar budget for drones and new technology.
"I feel it's really irresponsible use of money," said Isabel Garcia, a Tucson activist.
Supporters of this new proposal say it's necessary to crackdown on those attempting to cross the border illegally.
The immigration bill would also provide a pathway to citizenship for the 11 million undocumented immigrants currently here.
Alma Hernandez -- a dreamer-- says her parents don't have documents. She knows the continuous debate on immigration reform will be a long road ahead.
"Because my parents right now are like 50 so by the time they get legalized they will be 60 or 65. When they're going to be retired, they'll have to start working for the future," said Hernandez. "It's not even worth it."
