ROMA - The Border Patrol has turned to shuttling agents to the field in Starr County to save fuel.
CHANNEL 5 NEWS recently found seven Border Patrol units parked in front of the Roma Police Department. The agents are shuttled in from their station in Alto Bonito, more than 24 miles away.
The agents check their units and begin their patrols.
"As far as I'm concerned, budget cuts are good if they are done proportionally. In this case, I don't think they're good," Roma resident Marty Wasserman said.
"Budget cuts on the border are not good for us, period. We always have a problem with immigration and various other things," Wasserman said.
"If it affects the border, we can't have it," Wasserman said.
The drastic measures also worry Vidalia Zetina.
"I am undocumented, but I am in favor of Border Patrol ... especially now when there's a lot organized crime," Zetina said.
Border Patrol officials released a statement about the new procedure.
"The chief patrol agent of the sector has a responsibility to operate within a prescribed budget. The $600 million in cuts to CBP does impact the local operation budget, and therefore the sector must take cost-saving actions," the statement said.
Border Patrol said the new measure is a way to reduce the impact budget cuts have on the border security efforts.
