Joel Torres, the president of JM2 Auto Sales in Apopka, Florida, always made sure to hook up the Gulf Cartel in Mexico with nice rides. According to federal prosecutors in Orlando, Florida, Torres and his company’s vice-president Eladio Marroquin-Medina laundered drug proceeds for the Gulf Cartel by selling members cars that were delivered to Texas. At one point during the money laundering conspiracy, from October 26, 2010 to November 16, 2010, one cartel member brought more than $115,000 in cash into JM2 for the purchase of vehicles.
On Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Roy B. Dalton, Jr. sentenced the 41-year-old Torres to 40 months in federal prison for money laundering and failing to file IRS Forms 8300. A federal jury found Torres guilty on December 3, 2012. Marroquin-Medina was sentenced to six years back in February following his conviction on money laundering and marijuana trafficking charges.
