Ranchers on the border soon could have a direct line to higher-ups in federal border security agencies, thanks to a recently approved amendment to the new immigration reform bill from Sen. Jeff Flake.

Flake’s amendment was approved on May 9 during hearings in the Senate Judiciary Committee, the first committee to consider the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act, introduced into the U.S. Senate on April 16.Flake’s amendment was approved on May 9 during hearings in the Senate Judiciary Committee, the first committee to consider the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act, introduced into the U.S. Senate on April 16.

Should the bill become law, three ranchers will sit on the Homeland Security Border Oversight Task Force, which would make recommendations on how to improve the relationships between border communities and federal agencies, as well as lessen the impact of immigration and border enforcement policies on those communities.

In the original version of the bill, the task force included 26 representatives from local government, law enforcement, civil rights advocates, business, higher education, faith groups, and Border Patrol.

Landowners along the border, including ranchers, are obviously well-positioned to offer advice and recommendations as to how immigration and border enforcement affect border communities,” said Genevieve Rozansky, press secretary for Sen. Flake, in an email.
“And considering they’ve paid far more than their fair share for the federal government’s failure to secure the border, they deserve a say in how efforts along the border can be repaired and improved,” she said.

On May 7, the Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs began hearings on the bill.

Flake, a Republican from Snowflake, was sworn in to the Senate at the start of 2013 after Arizona voters chose him to replace retiring Sen. Jon Kyl, also a Republican. He, along with fellow Ariz. Sen. John McCain, was a member of the so-called “Gang of Eight” senators who originally crafted the immigration reform bill.
